ersonally, I have carried out a research work of relevance in the subject of science of complex
systems. In particular, since its inception, in 1998, I have devoted many efforts to the field of
complex networks. Throughout this period, I have published in some of the most prestigious
journals in the field of complex systems, giving rise to a very good record of citations. Some of
these publications have become seminal papers in the field, for instance, my contributions to
the synchronization in complex networks, my works on community detection, and my vision of
multiplex networks. Fortunately, this activity has been possible thanks to numerous funded
projects, including a continuous source of funding from the Spanish and Catalan funding
agencies. This extended career has recently been rewarded with recognition as a Fellow of
the Network Science Society.
This line of continuous efforts has led me to constitute a large group (among researchers from
the University of Barcelona and the Rovira i Virgili University) of international reference in this
field, since in recent years we have obtained alternative sources of funding not expected in
normal conditions, such as European projects and contracts with companies, and organizing
the most important conferences in the field.
Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of supervising a large group of young
researchers, as director of doctoral thesis, or, to a lesser extent, as tutor of their final degree
or final master's work. In this sense, there remains the satisfaction of seeing that most of them
have undertaken research careers, both in academic and in business settings, highlighting the
relevance of the science of complex networks as applied to other disciplines and to businesses.
This is about young researchers, during the most recent years, but it has been an immense
pleasure to have collaborated with outstanding scientists in the past.
Over the last few years, I have also carried out an important task of organization, mobilization,
and coordination of efforts in this area at the Catalan level, giving rise to the organization
"complexitat.cat" and more recently to the creation of the Universitat de Barcelona Institute of
Complex Systems, of which I was the director in the period 2016-2024. In addition to
coordinating efforts, one of the objectives has been to increase the visibility of the group of
researchers working on complex systems in our environment.
As an active professor, in recent years one of the usual tasks has been to participate in different
evaluation committees, both in terms of teaching positions and membership in accreditation
committees. Finally, I would also like to highlight my efforts to disseminate the research carried out in the
science of complex systems and of complex networks. For this reason, I have participated in
all those activities aimed at the public that I have been able to and that have increased the
visibility and impact of our research. I have also participated in a technology transfer
experience within a data science group at the University of Barcelona
(http://datascience.barcelona) and developed a series of applications based on network
science.
